Promotion open to new US customers

Buy $15 of crypto, get $20 in Bitcoin

Coinbase is running a new-customer referral promotion: open an account through a referral link, make a first purchase of at least $15 of any crypto, and $20 in Bitcoin is paid into your account within 5–15 days of that purchase. It is new customers only. This page walks through the exact sequence, the full eligibility rules, and the honest math on what it actually nets you.

Use the link — the reward attaches to accounts opened through a referral link. This page contains my referral link, and I receive a reward if you sign up and qualify. Full disclosure at the bottom of this page.

The walkthrough, in order

Four steps. The order matters — step 1 is what makes you eligible in the first place, and step 3 is the one people fumble.

Open the account through the referral link Required

Click through to coinbase.com/join/AFRLFUL and create the account from there. Sign up directly at coinbase.com instead and no bonus is credited — the promotion is keyed to the referral link, and it cannot be attached after the fact.

Sign-up takes a few minutes and needs an email address and a phone number.

Verify your identity New customers only

Coinbase requires a government ID and a quick selfie/selfie-video check before you can trade. For most people this clears in a few minutes; a minority get a manual review that can take a day or two.

If you have ever held a Coinbase account, you do not qualify — the promotion is strictly for new customers. Some advanced account types are excluded too.

Buy at least $15 of any crypto The qualifying action

This is the one transaction that matters. The asset choice is yours — Bitcoin, Ethereum, anything Coinbase lists. You do not need to move it, stake it, or trade it afterwards.

Buy a little over $15. Fees come out of the order, so a $15.00 order can settle a few cents under the threshold and miss it. $16 clears it with margin — and because the $20 bonus is a fixed amount, a smaller qualifying buy is simply the better trade.

Fund it with a bank transfer (ACH) if you can — debit card and instant deposit routes carry noticeably higher fees on small orders.

Wait 5–15 days for the reward to be paid

The $20 in Bitcoin is paid within 5–15 days of your qualifying purchase — not instantly. Coinbase processes eligible reward payouts inside that window, so budget a fortnight before you start wondering where it is.

The $20 arrives in Bitcoin, not as cash — its dollar value will drift with the Bitcoin price from the moment it lands.

What it actually nets you

Worked through on a $16 qualifying purchase. The gain is far closer to the headline than most write-ups admit — because the crypto you buy to qualify is still yours.

Line itemAmount
Cash you put in$16 — enough to clear the $15 threshold with fee margin
Coinbase's fee on that purchaseRoughly 1–4%, depending on payment method
Bitcoin from your $16 purchase~$15.35–$15.85 — this stays yours. It is not a cost.
Bonus Bitcoin credited+$20.00, within 5–15 days of the purchase
Bitcoin you hold afterwards~$35.35–$35.85
Net gain≈ +$19.35 to +$19.85
Return on the cash you put in≈ +120% — a one-time promotional gain, not a repeatable return
The bonus really is about $20, minus fees. The easy mistake — one an earlier version of this page made — is counting the $16 purchase as a cost. It isn't: you still own that Bitcoin. Your actual costs are the fees of a few percent, plus the fact that your money now sits in an asset whose price moves.
Second-order costs worth knowing: fees also apply when you sell or move the crypto, selling at a profit is a taxable event in the US, and the $20 reward itself can be taxable income. The Bitcoin price at payout time moves the final number, since the reward is $20 of Bitcoin, not $20 of cash.

Eligibility rules, verbatim in substance

These are Coinbase's conditions, not mine. Everything below can change or end without notice — check the official terms before you count on the payout.

  • You must be a new Coinbase customer — no prior account, and certain advanced account types are excluded.
  • You must open the account using a unique referral link — this one, or someone else's. Not a direct sign-up.
  • You must complete a qualifying purchase of $15+ of any crypto within the window Coinbase specifies for the offer.
  • Washington state residents are not eligible. Coinbase also states referral links should not be sent by text message to WA residents.
  • Payouts are not guaranteed, and it's a limited-time offer. Rewards are paid within 5–15 days of the qualifying purchase. Coinbase reserves the right to modify, suspend, or terminate the program at any time.
  • Offer terms are set by Coinbase and can differ by state and over time. This page is a summary, not the contract.
Offer details described here are current as of 25 September 2026 and come from the referral page Coinbase serves. Verify them on the official terms page before acting.

Questions people actually ask

Do I have to trade, or does just buying count?

Coinbase's promotion wording is "buy $15 of any crypto" — the purchase itself is the qualifying action, and there's no requirement to sell, swap between assets, or move anything off the exchange.

That said, the exact definition of a "qualifying transaction" lives in the official terms, and Coinbase sometimes specifies the window it must happen within. Read them before you assume.

How much should I actually buy?

Just over $15 — $16 is the number. Fees are deducted from your order, so a $15.00 purchase can land at $14.8x of crypto and miss the threshold.

Don't buy more than you need to. The $20 bonus is a fixed amount, so a $20 or $50 order doesn't increase it — it only ties up more of your money and lowers your percentage return. $16 funded by bank transfer is the efficient play.

I already have a Coinbase account. Can I still get this?

No. This promotion is explicitly for new customers. Opening a second account to capture it would violate Coinbase's terms and risks the account being closed.

I live in Washington state.

You're not eligible for this promotion, and Coinbase's own referral page says referral links should not be sent to WA residents by text message. Don't use this link.

How long until the $20 shows up?

Within 5–15 days of your qualifying purchase. That is the window Coinbase gives for eligible reward payouts, so a reward that has not landed by day three is normal and is not worth a support ticket.

When it does land, check your Bitcoin balance rather than your cash balance, since that is where the reward is credited. Past 15 days with nothing showing is the point to contact Coinbase support.

Can Coinbase just cancel this before I get paid?

Yes, and they say so plainly: payouts are not guaranteed, and they may modify, suspend, or terminate the program at any time. This is a promotion, not an obligation they owe you.

Do I have to keep the Bitcoin?

No. Once it's credited it's yours to hold or sell. Just remember that selling incurs its own fee and creates a taxable event if it's worth more than your cost basis. That's a general statement, not tax advice — talk to someone qualified about your situation.

Is this page run by Coinbase?

No. This is an independent guide written by a Coinbase user who has a referral link in the promotion. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Coinbase — see the disclosure below.

What's your angle here?

Straightforward: I get $20 in Bitcoin when someone signs up through my link and makes a qualifying purchase — the same bonus you get. That's why the link is on this page, and why I've written out the fees, the payout window and the eligibility rules instead of just shouting about "free Bitcoin."
